Turkey has carried out vaccine development process since June 2020. Although authorities have mentioned about 16 different vaccine development programs, only one of them has progressed to Phase 3 so far. It is called Turkovac.

Sponsored by Turkish Health Institutes Presidency (TÜSEB) and developed by research centers affiliated with Erciyes University, Turkovac is known as an Inactivated vaccine. It is the most comprehensive vaccine development project in Turkey with eight separate clinical studies carried out simultaneously.

Development of Turkovac

On 5 November 2020, the Phase 1 program of Turkovac, which wasn’t named with that name at the time, has started. Studies conducted on 44 volunteers resulted in positive results.1

On 27 May 2021, Erciyes University Rector Mustafa Çalış announced that the vaccine had 100% success in the formation of antibodies in the Phase-2 process.2 Phase 3 studies, which include the evaluation of the effectiveness of the domestic vaccine on a wider population, started as of June 22 last year.

On 22 December 2021, Turkovac has taken Emergency Use Authorization from the Turkey Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency.
